Kenya – Amina’s courage sparked change and action

In the quiet coastal town of Kipini in Kenya, a mother’s story broke through the silence and heartbreak many women were experiencing. It stirred a community to action.

Amina’s* life represented a difficult reality. As fish stocks declined and prices rose, many women in her village were forced into transactional relationships just to feed their families.

Amina said, “It’s humiliating… but I have children to feed. When a boat arrives, you’ll often see twenty women crowding around, all desperate to buy fish first. To secure my share, I have to make arrangements with a fisherman or the captain—offering myself in exchange. That way, next time the boat docks, I get priority. It’s humiliating and heartbreaking, but I have children to feed, and this is the only way I can survive.”

It’s a story rarely told. But Amina bravely shared her story on Vox Radio, a station supported by FEBC.

The broadcast did more than expose a painful truth. It ignited action. Religious leaders—both Christian and Muslim—began addressing these exploitative practices within their communities. Local authorities listened. NGOs stepped in to explore sustainable economic alternatives. The community came together and worked on sustainable solutions involving economic empowerment, public health awareness, and uplifting women.

Vox Radio provided a voice for the voiceless. Broadcasting Amina’s story highlighted the intersecting issues of poverty, gender inequality, and exploitation—and empowered the community to respond.

This is the kind of change your support brings.

Through FEBC’s partnerships with stations like Vox Radio, communities hear the Gospel as well as local stories—and are mobilised to act for dignity, justice, and hope.
